Evidence supporting the use of: Cowherb
For the health condition: Cirrhosis of the Liver
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Cowherb (commonly referring to Vaccaria segetalis, also known as Wang Bu Liu Xing in Traditional Chinese Medicine) has a historical basis for use in supporting liver health, including conditions such as cirrhosis. In traditional Chinese medicine, Cowherb seeds are believed to promote blood circulation, reduce swelling, and address "blood stasis"—a concept often associated with chronic liver diseases. Ancient texts and traditional herbal compendia describe Cowherb as a component of formulas targeting liver disorders, although cirrhosis as understood in modern medicine is not directly referenced.
However, scientific evidence supporting Cowherb’s efficacy for cirrhosis is limited. There are a few pharmacological studies suggesting anti-inflammatory and hepatoprotective effects in animal models, but these are preliminary and do not directly address cirrhosis or its complications in humans. No high-quality clinical trials or systematic reviews confirm the effectiveness or safety of Cowherb for cirrhosis treatment in humans. Therefore, while the use of Cowherb for liver conditions is primarily grounded in traditional practice, the evidence for its efficacy in treating or supporting cirrhosis is weak and not validated by rigorous scientific research.
