Evidence supporting the use of: Eupolyphaga sinensis
For the health condition: Cirrhosis of the Liver
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Eupolyphaga sinensis, also known as the Chinese black beetle, has been used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for centuries. In TCM, it is often employed to promote blood circulation, remove blood stasis, and alleviate conditions related to liver disorders, including cirrhosis of the liver. The use is primarily based on traditional theories rather than robust scientific evidence. Some classical texts and herbal compendia reference Eupolyphaga sinensis as an ingredient in formulas intended to "soften hardness" and resolve masses, which is interpreted in TCM as beneficial for conditions like hepatic cirrhosis where fibrosis and nodules occur. However, scientific studies directly examining its efficacy or safety in the treatment of liver cirrhosis are limited, mostly consisting of in vitro or animal research that investigates possible antifibrotic or anti-inflammatory effects of its extracts. These preliminary studies are not sufficient to validate clinical effectiveness. Therefore, its use for cirrhosis is justified primarily by tradition, and the supporting evidence from modern biomedical research remains weak.
