Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Garcinia pedunculata, commonly known as "Bengal Garcinia" or "Amlaveta," has a longstanding use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Northeastern India and parts of Southeast Asia. It is often used as a folk remedy for various digestive and liver-related ailments, including jaundice and general liver dysfunction. The fruit is thought to possess hepatoprotective and antioxidant properties due to its rich content of phenolic compounds and organic acids.

However, direct scientific evidence specifically supporting the use of Garcinia pedunculata to treat or manage cirrhosis of the liver is limited. Most available data are derived from animal studies or in vitro analyses, which suggest that extracts of the fruit may reduce oxidative stress and offer some protective effects against chemically-induced liver injury. These findings, however, do not directly translate to clinical efficacy in human cirrhosis, a complex and advanced liver disease. No robust clinical trials or high-quality human studies have been published as of June 2024.

In summary, the use of Garcinia pedunculata for cirrhosis is primarily rooted in traditional practice, with only preliminary preclinical evidence hinting at possible benefits. Its role in the management of cirrhosis remains unproven and should not substitute for evidence-based medical treatments.
