Evidence supporting the use of: Hedyotis
For the health condition: Cirrhosis of the Liver
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Hedyotis, particularly Hedyotis diffusa, is widely used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for liver-related ailments, including cirrhosis. Its use is rooted in centuries of traditional practice, where it is believed to “clear heat and toxins” and support liver health. Hedyotis is commonly included in herbal formulas for chronic liver diseases, especially in combination with other herbs such as Scutellaria barbata and Phyllanthus urinaria. However, scientific evidence for its efficacy in treating cirrhosis specifically is limited. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest that extracts of Hedyotis possess anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-fibrotic effects, which could theoretically benefit liver function and slow the progression of fibrosis. Nonetheless, these effects have not been robustly demonstrated in large-scale clinical trials in humans with cirrhosis. Thus, while its use for liver support is well established in TCM and supported by some preclinical data, there is insufficient high-quality clinical evidence to fully validate its effectiveness for cirrhosis management. Most recommendations for its use in cirrhosis are therefore based on traditional knowledge rather than rigorous scientific validation.
