Evidence supporting the use of: Hygrophila
For the health condition: Cirrhosis of the Liver
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Hygrophila, known in Ayurveda as “Kulekhara” or “Kokilaksha” (Hygrophila auriculata), has a long-standing traditional use in Indian herbal medicine for supporting liver health, including in cases of jaundice and liver cirrhosis. Traditional Ayurvedic texts describe preparations using Hygrophila for “Yakrit roga” (liver disorders) and as a “hepatoprotective” plant. These uses are primarily based on empirical knowledge and historical practice rather than rigorous clinical trials.
Scientific studies investigating Hygrophila’s efficacy for cirrhosis are limited and mostly preclinical. Some animal studies suggest that extracts of Hygrophila auriculata may have hepatoprotective effects, possibly due to antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. For example, research in rats has shown some protective effects against chemically-induced liver damage, with improvements in biochemical markers of liver function. However, there is a lack of large-scale human clinical trials, and no robust clinical evidence specifically supports its use in cirrhosis of the liver.
In summary, the use of Hygrophila for cirrhosis is justified primarily by traditional practice, and only supported by limited preclinical evidence. More rigorous human studies are needed to validate its efficacy and safety for this condition.
