Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Polyphenols are a diverse group of naturally occurring compounds found in plants, with notable subtypes including flavonoids, phenolic acids, and stilbenes. There is emerging scientific interest in their potential role for supporting liver health, including in conditions like cirrhosis of the liver. Preclinical studies (especially in vitro and animal models) have demonstrated that certain polyphenols, such as those found in green tea (epigallocatechin gallate), resveratrol (from grapes), and curcumin (from turmeric), may exert antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-fibrotic effects that could theoretically be protective against liver injury and fibrosis.

However, the clinical evidence in humans is limited and often preliminary. Some small clinical trials and observational studies have observed improvements in markers of liver injury or oxidative stress in patients with chronic liver diseases when supplemented with specific polyphenols. Despite this, robust, large-scale randomized controlled trials specifically in patients with cirrhosis are lacking, and no polyphenol supplement is currently approved or widely recommended as a treatment for cirrhosis. Most guidance is extrapolated from general liver-protective effects seen in non-cirrhotic populations or animal models. Therefore, while there is a scientific rationale and some supportive preclinical evidence, the overall clinical evidence base remains weak, which is reflected in the rating.
