Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum), also known as Lingzhi, has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for supporting liver health, including in cases of chronic liver diseases such as cirrhosis. Historically, Reishi has been valued for its purported "detoxifying" and "restorative" properties, with TCM texts indicating its use to "nourish the liver" and promote longevity.

Modern scientific studies on Reishi’s effects in cirrhosis are limited. Some preclinical research (in vitro and animal studies) suggests that Reishi extracts may possess hepatoprotective effects, potentially reducing liver fibrosis, modulating immune responses, and exhibiting antioxidant activity. For example, animal studies have shown that polysaccharides and triterpenoids from Reishi can decrease markers of liver injury and fibrosis. However, these findings have not yet been robustly validated in human clinical trials, especially in patients with established cirrhosis.

Currently, there are no large, high-quality randomized controlled trials demonstrating the efficacy or safety of Reishi for treating or reversing cirrhosis in humans. Any current use for this condition is primarily based on traditional practice and limited preclinical data, rather than strong clinical evidence. Therefore, while Reishi is traditionally used for liver health in some cultures, scientific support for its use specifically in cirrhosis is still weak and should be approached with caution.
