Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Sarsaparilla, derived from several species of the Smilax plant, has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in South America, India, and China. It has been traditionally used as a "blood purifier" and for the treatment of various ailments, including skin diseases, rheumatism, and liver disorders. The use of sarsaparilla for liver conditions, such as cirrhosis, is primarily rooted in this traditional context rather than in robust scientific validation. Some herbalists and traditional medicine systems may recommend sarsaparilla for liver support based on its perceived detoxifying properties and its historical use in formulas intended to improve liver function. However, there is very limited clinical or preclinical evidence specifically supporting the efficacy of sarsaparilla (mixed or otherwise) in the treatment or management of cirrhosis of the liver. The available scientific studies on sarsaparilla mostly focus on its potential anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties, but do not offer substantial direct evidence for benefits in cirrhosis. Therefore, while its use is justified by tradition, the scientific evidence is weak, and it should not be considered a proven or reliable treatment for cirrhosis.
