Synopsis

Rating (out of 5): 2

Varuna (Crataeva nurvala) has a longstanding place in Ayurvedic medicine, where it is traditionally used to support liver health, including in conditions such as cirrhosis of the liver. References to Varuna’s hepatoprotective effects appear in classical Ayurvedic texts, which recommend it for the “cleansing” and support of the liver and urinary system. The traditional rationale is based on its purported ability to “break down” and “drain” toxins and to support bile flow. However, direct clinical evidence in humans specifically for cirrhosis is limited.

Scientific studies on Varuna are mostly preclinical, involving animal models or in vitro systems. Some studies have shown that extracts of Crataeva nurvala can reduce biochemical markers of liver damage and oxidative stress in rats exposed to hepatotoxins. For example, hepatoprotective effects have been observed in animal models with chemically-induced liver injury, suggesting antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. However, these findings have not been robustly confirmed in human clinical trials, especially in the context of cirrhosis.

In summary, while Varuna is widely used in traditional medicine for liver health and some experimental data suggest potential hepatoprotective actions, there is a lack of high-quality clinical evidence to justify its use for cirrhosis of the liver in modern practice.
