Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Bioflavonoids, also known as flavonoids, are plant compounds found in fruits and vegetables that have been traditionally used to support immune health and reduce inflammation. Their application for cold sores (herpes labialis) is based primarily on their historical use and their known antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties rather than robust scientific evidence. Traditionally, bioflavonoids have been combined with vitamin C in supplements marketed to help prevent or reduce the severity of recurrent cold sores. The rationale is that bioflavonoids may support immune function and help the body combat viral infections, including herpes simplex virus (HSV), which causes cold sores.

A few small studies and anecdotal reports have suggested that bioflavonoids, particularly in combination with vitamin C, might reduce the frequency or duration of cold sore outbreaks. However, these studies are generally limited by small sample sizes, lack of rigorous controls, and inconsistent results. There is no strong consensus or high-quality clinical evidence to definitively support the use of bioflavonoids for treating or preventing cold sores. Most medical guidelines for cold sore management do not mention bioflavonoids as a recommended therapy. Thus, while the use of bioflavonoids for cold sores is rooted in tradition and plausible biological mechanisms, scientific support remains limited and inconclusive.
