Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Elder flower (Sambucus nigra) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in Europe, for the management of upper respiratory tract infections, fever, and inflammation. Its use for cold sores (herpes labialis) is primarily based on traditional practices rather than robust scientific evidence. Folk medicine sometimes recommends elder flower infusions or topical preparations for soothing skin eruptions, including cold sores, due to its purported anti-inflammatory and mild antiviral properties. However, most of the historical and ethnobotanical literature references elder flower as supporting general immune function and reducing the severity of colds and flu, not specifically herpes simplex virus (HSV), the causative agent of cold sores.

There is limited scientific research examining the direct effects of elder flower on HSV or cold sores. Most studies focus on elderberry fruit, which has demonstrated some antiviral effects in vitro, but not specifically for HSV. As a result, the evidence supporting elder flower for cold sore treatment is weak (rated 1/5), relying primarily on traditional use and anecdotal reports rather than well-designed clinical trials or mechanistic studies.

In summary, while elder flower has a place in traditional medicine for general immune support, there is insufficient scientific validation for its use in treating or preventing cold sores.
