Evidence supporting the use of: Lomatium
For the health condition: Cold Sores
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Lomatium, a plant native to North America, has been traditionally used by Native American tribes for a variety of infections, including respiratory illnesses and skin conditions. Its root preparations have a long history of use as a general immune support and as an herbal remedy for viral infections. In the context of cold sores (herpes simplex virus), there is anecdotal and traditional documentation of its use, particularly in herbal medicine circles in the western United States. However, there are no robust clinical trials or rigorous scientific studies directly supporting its efficacy for treating or preventing cold sores. Most of the available evidence is based on historical accounts and practitioner experience rather than controlled research.
Some laboratory studies have suggested that extracts of Lomatium may have antiviral properties, but these studies are preliminary and not directly focused on herpes simplex virus or cold sores. The lack of human clinical trials means that the evidence supporting its use for cold sores remains weak and primarily rooted in tradition. Thus, while Lomatium is used in traditional herbal practice for this purpose, scientific validation is currently lacking.
