Evidence supporting the use of: Ravinsara
For the health condition: Cold Sores
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Ravintsara (Cinnamomum camphora, chemotype 1,8-cineole) is commonly used in traditional aromatherapy to support the management of cold sores, which are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV-1). Traditional use is primarily based on its perceived antiviral and immune-supportive properties, as well as its ability to soothe symptoms and promote healing. In folk and aromatherapy traditions, Ravintsara essential oil is applied (typically diluted) topically to cold sores or used in inhalation blends.
However, there is a limited body of scientific research directly validating Ravintsara’s effectiveness against HSV-1 or cold sores. Most evidence is anecdotal or extrapolated from studies on related essential oils or constituents, such as 1,8-cineole, which has shown some in vitro antiviral activity. No robust clinical trials have specifically examined Ravintsara oil for cold sores in humans. Thus, while its use is well-established in traditional and holistic circles, scientific validation is weak and primarily indirect. Caution should be exercised, as essential oils can cause irritation or allergic reactions when applied to the skin, especially on mucosal areas like the lips.
