Evidence supporting the use of: Amentoflavone
For the health condition: Colds (antiviral)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Amentoflavone is a biflavonoid compound found in several medicinal plants, such as Selaginella tamariscina and Ginkgo biloba. Its use for colds (as an antiviral) is supported by some preliminary scientific research, primarily in vitro (test tube) studies. Specifically, amentoflavone has demonstrated inhibitory activity against a variety of viruses, including influenza viruses, which are common causes of colds. For example, studies have shown that amentoflavone can block viral entry, replication, or enzyme function in certain viruses, including influenza A. Additionally, amentoflavone has shown some activity against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and human coronavirus in cell-based experiments. However, it is important to note that these effects have not yet been confirmed in human clinical trials. There are currently no high-quality human studies demonstrating that amentoflavone supplementation can prevent or treat colds. Most research remains preclinical and does not directly translate to clinical efficacy. While the compound shows promise as a potential antiviral agent, more research, particularly in humans, is needed to establish its effectiveness and safety for this purpose. Therefore, the evidence supporting its use for colds is limited and should be considered preliminary.
