Anthocyanins are natural pigments found in many fruits and vegetables, especially berries, and have been traditionally associated with health benefits. However, there is increasing scientific interest in their potential antiviral effects, including against cold viruses. Laboratory (in vitro) studies have shown that anthocyanins can inhibit the replication of certain viruses, such as influenza and some rhinoviruses, which are common causes of colds. The proposed mechanisms include interference with viral entry into host cells, modulation of immune responses, and reduction of inflammation. Despite promising preclinical data, the clinical evidence supporting anthocyanins for treating or preventing the common cold remains limited. Most human studies focus on general immune support or upper respiratory tract infection symptoms rather than direct antiviral effects. For instance, some trials with elderberry (rich in anthocyanins) have shown reduced duration and severity of cold and flu symptoms, but these studies are small and sometimes lack rigorous controls. Systematic reviews suggest potential benefit but emphasize the need for larger, high-quality clinical trials. In summary, while there is some preliminary scientific evidence that anthocyanins may support the body in fighting viral infections like the common cold, the strength of clinical evidence is moderate at best. Thus, anthocyanins are considered scientifically justified for this use, but with a relatively low evidence rating (2/5) due to the limited size and quality of human studies.
