Evidence supporting the use of: Berry
For the health condition: Colds (antiviral)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Berries, particularly elderberry (Sambucus nigra), have a history of traditional use for supporting immune health and treating colds, but there is also some scientific evidence supporting their antiviral properties. Several in vitro and small-scale clinical studies have evaluated elderberry extracts, which are rich in anthocyanins and polyphenols, for their ability to inhibit influenza virus replication and reduce the duration and severity of cold and flu symptoms. A few randomized controlled trials (e.g., Tiralongo et al., 2016; Zakay-Rones et al., 2004) found that elderberry preparations may reduce symptom duration by a few days in people with influenza-like illness compared to placebo. The proposed mechanisms include the inhibition of viral entry into cells and modulation of cytokine production.
However, the overall quality of the evidence is limited by small sample sizes, short study durations, and variability in product formulations. Other berries (such as blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries) have demonstrated general antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, but direct evidence for their use in treating colds in humans is lacking. Thus, while there is some scientific support for elderberry, more rigorous research is needed to confirm efficacy and safety, and the evidence for other berries remains preliminary.
