Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Bidens pilosa, commonly known as Spanish needle, has been traditionally used in various cultures, particularly in Africa, Asia, and South America, to manage symptoms of colds and other respiratory infections. More recently, scientific research has provided some support for these traditional uses, particularly regarding its antiviral properties. Laboratory studies have identified several bioactive compounds in Bidens pilosa, such as polyacetylenes, flavonoids, and phenylpropanoids, which exhibit antiviral activity against a range of viruses, including those responsible for respiratory infections. For example, in vitro studies have shown that extracts of Bidens pilosa can inhibit the replication of influenza virus and other common cold viruses, likely through mechanisms such as interference with viral entry or replication within host cells.

However, while preclinical (test tube and animal) evidence is promising, clinical trials in humans are very limited or lacking. No large-scale, high-quality studies have confirmed its efficacy in treating or preventing the common cold in people. Therefore, while scientific evidence partially supports the antiviral properties of Bidens pilosa, more rigorous human research is needed to substantiate its use specifically for colds. The evidence is currently rated as moderate (3/5), reflecting promising laboratory data but insufficient clinical validation.
