Blueberry (Vaccinium spp.) has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in North America and Europe, for a variety of health conditions, including as a general remedy to support the immune system. While blueberries are primarily known for their antioxidant properties due to high levels of anthocyanins and vitamin C, their use in treating or preventing colds (which are often viral in origin) is based more on traditional beliefs than robust scientific evidence.

Historically, indigenous peoples in North America used blueberry leaves and fruits in teas to treat coughs and colds, and early European herbalists sometimes recommended berries for similar purposes. The rationale was often related to the berry’s perceived ability to “cleanse the blood” and support overall health, rather than direct antiviral activity.

Modern scientific studies have shown that blueberries do have immune-modulating and anti-inflammatory effects, and some laboratory research suggests certain compounds in blueberries can inhibit viral replication in vitro. However, direct human clinical evidence supporting blueberry as an effective antiviral agent against cold viruses (such as rhinovirus or coronavirus) is lacking. Thus, while there is a traditional precedent and some biological plausibility, the evidence base is limited and does not rise to the level of scientific validation for this particular use.
