Carrageenan, a sulfated polysaccharide derived from red seaweed, has been investigated for its antiviral properties, particularly in the context of treating or supporting recovery from the common cold. The scientific basis for its use comes from several in vitro and clinical studies, particularly focusing on iota-carrageenan as a nasal spray. Laboratory studies demonstrate that iota-carrageenan can bind to and trap respiratory viruses (such as rhinoviruses and some coronaviruses), preventing their attachment and entry into human cells.
Several randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trials have evaluated carrageenan nasal sprays in adults and children with early symptoms of the common cold. These studies report a reduction in viral load, symptom severity, and duration of illness in those treated with iota-carrageenan compared to placebo. Notably, a 2010 study in Respiratory Research and a 2015 study in Respiratory Medicine found statistically significant benefits, though sample sizes were moderate, and effects—while real—were not dramatic. Safety profiles from these trials are favorable, with few adverse events reported.
While the body of evidence is not as large or robust as for some other antiviral therapies, there is a moderate level of scientific validation for the use of iota-carrageenan nasal sprays as a supportive measure in treating or reducing the severity of common colds. The evidence base is strongest for topical (nasal) application rather than oral ingestion.
