Evidence supporting the use of: Elderberry
For the health condition: Colds (antiviral)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Elderberry (Sambucus nigra) has a long history of use in traditional medicine for treating colds and flu-like symptoms. In recent years, its use has received scientific attention, with several studies investigating its antiviral properties. Elderberry extracts are rich in flavonoids, particularly anthocyanins, which are believed to have immune-modulating and antiviral effects. Laboratory research has shown that elderberry can inhibit the replication of influenza viruses and may block the viral proteins needed for the virus to enter host cells.
Clinical evidence, though limited, is promising. A double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in 2004 found that participants with influenza who took elderberry syrup experienced a reduction in the duration and severity of symptoms compared to those given a placebo. Other small trials have shown similar benefits for upper respiratory symptoms, although the total number of participants remains limited. Meta-analyses suggest that elderberry supplementation may shorten the duration of cold symptoms, but emphasize the need for larger, high-quality trials to confirm efficacy and establish optimal dosing.
In summary, elderberry’s use for colds is supported both by traditional use and a moderate but growing body of scientific evidence. While it appears to be generally safe for short-term use, more robust studies are needed to firmly establish its role in the prevention and treatment of viral respiratory infections.
