Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is a major polyphenol found in green tea. Its use as an antiviral agent, particularly to support or treat colds (commonly caused by rhinoviruses and coronaviruses), has some basis in scientific research, although the level of evidence is still preliminary. In vitro studies have shown that EGCG can inhibit the replication of several types of viruses, including influenza, adenoviruses, and certain coronaviruses, by interfering with viral entry, replication, and assembly. Mechanistically, EGCG appears to disrupt viral membranes and inhibit key enzymes critical for viral lifecycle. Some small-scale clinical trials suggest that green tea catechins, including EGCG, may reduce the incidence or duration of upper respiratory tract infections in humans, possibly by enhancing immune function or direct antiviral effects. However, the number and quality of clinical trials specifically targeting the common cold are limited, and most human data are derived from studies of green tea extracts rather than isolated EGCG. While there is promising laboratory evidence, the clinical significance for routine use against colds is not firmly established, resulting in a moderate-low evidence rating. Further large, well-controlled human studies are needed to confirm its efficacy and optimal dosing for cold prevention or treatment.
