Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Gamma-terpinene is a monoterpene found in various essential oils, including those from citrus fruits and some medicinal plants. Its use in supporting or treating colds is primarily rooted in traditional medicine, where plant extracts containing gamma-terpinene (such as tea tree or thyme oil) have been used for their general antimicrobial and aromatic properties. However, there is limited direct scientific evidence specifically validating gamma-terpinene as an effective antiviral agent against cold viruses (such as rhinoviruses or coronaviruses). Some in vitro studies suggest that gamma-terpinene exhibits modest antimicrobial and antioxidant effects, but these do not directly translate to clinical efficacy for viral respiratory infections. Most of the support for its use comes from its inclusion in complex essential oil preparations traditionally used for respiratory symptoms, rather than rigorous clinical trials or mechanistic studies confirming its antiviral activity in humans. As such, while gamma-terpinene is a component of traditional remedies for colds, the quality and quantity of evidence supporting its use for this purpose are low.
