Indian frankincense (Boswellia serrata) has been used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for centuries, primarily for its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. Its use for treating or supporting colds, specifically as an antiviral, is rooted more in traditional practices than in modern scientific validation. Historical texts suggest that Boswellia resin was used for respiratory issues such as coughs and bronchitis, which may overlap symptomatically with the common cold. The rationale in traditional systems is that frankincense helps clear respiratory passages and reduce inflammation, thereby alleviating symptoms associated with colds.
On the scientific front, there is limited evidence directly supporting frankincense as an antiviral agent specifically against cold viruses (such as rhinoviruses or coronaviruses). Some laboratory studies have demonstrated that Boswellia extracts possess general antimicrobial and modest antiviral activity, but these findings are preliminary and mostly in vitro (test tube) rather than in human clinical trials. The evidence for its efficacy in treating or preventing the common cold remains insufficient. Thus, while Indian frankincense is traditionally used for respiratory health, the scientific validation for its use against colds or as an antiviral is weak.
