Indigo leaves (from Indigofera tinctoria and related species) have a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, including Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine. In some cultures, indigo leaves have been used in decoctions, poultices, or teas to address symptoms associated with colds, such as fever, cough, and sore throat. The rationale for their use is based primarily on anecdotal evidence and traditional beliefs about their ability to "cool the blood," reduce inflammation, and provide relief from respiratory discomfort.
Scientific studies on the antiviral properties of indigo leaves are limited. Some in vitro research suggests that certain compounds in indigo, such as indirubin, may have immunomodulatory and mild antiviral effects, but these findings are preliminary and have not been specifically linked to common cold viruses in clinical trials. The evidence supporting the use of indigo leaves for treating or preventing colds is therefore not robust.
