Luteolin is a flavonoid found in a variety of plants, such as celery, parsley, and chamomile. Its use for supporting or treating colds is primarily based on emerging scientific evidence rather than long-standing tradition. Several in vitro and animal studies have shown that luteolin possesses broad antiviral properties, including activity against various respiratory viruses. For example, luteolin has been reported to inhibit the replication of influenza A virus and human rhinovirus, both of which are common causes of colds. The proposed mechanisms involve inhibition of viral entry, replication, and modulation of host immune responses—particularly through its anti-inflammatory effects via downregulation of cytokines like TNF-α and IL-6. Despite these promising preclinical findings, there is currently insufficient direct clinical evidence in humans to firmly establish luteolin’s efficacy in preventing or treating the common cold. Most of the available data are limited to laboratory or animal models, and randomized, controlled human trials are lacking. Thus, while luteolin shows potential as an antiviral agent that could support immune defense against cold viruses, its use for this purpose is not yet strongly validated in clinical settings. The overall evidence, therefore, rates as low to moderate (2/5), warranting further research to clarify its clinical relevance.
