Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Nymphaea nouchali, also known as blue lotus or star lotus, has been used in various traditional medicine systems across Asia for a range of ailments, including coughs and colds. The traditional use is primarily attributed to its general anti-inflammatory and soothing properties, as documented in Ayurvedic and Siddha medicine. However, there is minimal direct mention in classical texts specifically linking Nymphaea nouchali to the treatment or prevention of viral infections such as the common cold. Modern scientific research on its antiviral properties is limited and largely preliminary. A few in vitro studies have reported that extracts of Nymphaea species may show weak antiviral or immune-modulatory effects, but these findings are not robust enough to support clinical efficacy. No major clinical trials have established a clear benefit for the treatment of colds. Therefore, the support for its use in managing colds is mainly rooted in tradition rather than scientific validation, and the quality of evidence is weak.
