Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Shiitake mushroom (Lentinula edodes) has a long history of use in East Asian traditional medicine, where it has been consumed to support general immunity and treat various ailments, including colds. In terms of scientific evidence, several studies have investigated the potential immunomodulatory and antiviral properties of shiitake mushrooms. Shiitake contains polysaccharides, such as lentinan, which have demonstrated immune-enhancing effects in laboratory and some clinical settings. These polysaccharides can stimulate immune cell activity, including macrophages and T cells, which may help the body respond to viral infections like the common cold.

However, direct evidence supporting the effectiveness of shiitake mushrooms specifically against the cold virus in humans is limited. Most studies are either in vitro (test tube) or animal studies, showing that extracts from shiitake mushrooms can inhibit viral replication or enhance immune response. A small number of human studies have shown that regular consumption of shiitake can improve immune markers, but these do not directly measure cold incidence or severity as a primary outcome. Thus, while the bioactive compounds in shiitake have theoretical benefits and some supportive evidence, robust clinical trials specifically targeting viral upper respiratory tract infections are lacking.

In summary, the use of shiitake mushroom to support the immune system and potentially help with colds is scientifically plausible but not conclusively proven. The evidence base is suggestive but not strong (rated 2/5), and more well-designed human clinical trials are needed.
