Wasabia japonica, commonly known as wasabi, has a long history of use in Japanese cuisine, particularly as a condiment accompanying raw fish like sushi. Traditionally, it was believed to help prevent foodborne illnesses due to its pungent compounds. While these antimicrobial properties are well-documented, the application of wasabi specifically for the treatment or prevention of colds (which are viral infections) is less established. In Japanese folk medicine, wasabi has sometimes been attributed with “cleansing” or immune-boosting effects, but there is little direct documentation of its use specifically for colds. Scientifically, wasabi contains isothiocyanates, compounds shown in vitro to have some antimicrobial and even antiviral properties; however, robust clinical research demonstrating efficacy against cold viruses in humans is lacking. The majority of evidence remains anecdotal or based on traditional beliefs rather than controlled trials. Thus, while there is a traditional rationale for its use in fighting infections generally, the specific use of wasabi to treat or prevent colds is not strongly supported by scientific evidence at this time.
