Evidence supporting the use of: Aroma
For the health condition: Colds (decongestant)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Aromatherapy, the use of aromatic plant extracts and essential oils, has a long tradition in folk medicine for supporting respiratory health and treating colds. Essential oils such as eucalyptus, peppermint, and menthol have been popularly used for their perceived decongestant effects. The traditional justification is based on the volatile compounds in these oils, which, when inhaled, are believed to help open nasal passages and ease breathing. Historical use is widespread, appearing in various cultures through balms, steam inhalation, and chest rubs. However, while these practices are well established, scientific validation is limited. Some small studies suggest that inhalation of menthol or eucalyptus oil can subjectively improve the sensation of airflow, but objective measures of nasal airway openness generally do not show significant improvement. The evidence is most robust for the symptomatic relief of a blocked nose rather than as a true decongestant with measurable physiological impact. Overall, the use of aromatherapy for colds is primarily supported by tradition, and scientific evidence to support clinical efficacy is modest at best.
