Bee products—such as honey, propolis, and royal jelly—have a long history of traditional use in various cultures for the management of colds and respiratory symptoms, including as decongestants. Honey, in particular, has been used for centuries as a natural remedy to soothe sore throats, suppress coughs, and provide symptomatic relief during upper respiratory tract infections. Historical texts, including those from ancient Egypt, Greece, and traditional Chinese medicine, document such uses. The antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties of bee products are often cited as the basis for these traditional practices.
However, scientific validation specifically supporting bee products as decongestants is limited. Some studies show honey can reduce cough frequency and severity, particularly in children, when compared with placebo and certain over-the-counter treatments. There is also in vitro evidence that propolis exhibits antimicrobial activity against respiratory pathogens. Despite these findings, robust clinical evidence directly supporting the use of bee products as decongestants (i.e., to relieve nasal congestion) is lacking. Most research focuses on symptom relief (such as cough) rather than decongestion per se. Therefore, while traditional use is well-established, scientific evidence supporting bee products for this specific indication is modest.
