Belleric myrobalan (Terminalia bellirica), known as "Bibhitaki" in Ayurveda, has a long history of use in traditional Indian medicine for treating respiratory ailments, including coughs and colds. The fruit is a key ingredient in the classical Ayurvedic formulation "Triphala" and is often used alone or in combination with other herbs to address symptoms of congestion, sore throat, and respiratory discomfort. Classical Ayurvedic texts describe Belleric myrobalan as possessing "Kashaya" (astringent) and "Ruksha" (drying) properties, believed to help expel excess mucus and reduce symptoms of cough and cold. Its use as a decongestant or expectorant is largely based on these traditional frameworks. Some contemporary herbal practitioners in South Asia continue to recommend it for respiratory support, but this is rooted in traditional use rather than modern clinical trials. Scientific validation for these effects is limited. Available studies focus mainly on its antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties, often in vitro or in animal models, rather than in human clinical trials specifically for colds or nasal congestion. Therefore, while there is a strong traditional basis for using Belleric myrobalan as a decongestant, robust scientific evidence confirming its efficacy for this purpose is lacking at present.
