Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Clerodendrum trichotomum, also known as Harlequin Glorybower, has a history of use in traditional East Asian medicine, particularly in China and Japan, where various parts of the plant have been used for their purported medicinal properties. Traditional uses include the treatment of colds, coughs, and as a decongestant, often via decoctions or infusions of the leaves or roots. These uses are documented in some ethnobotanical surveys and historical pharmacopeias. However, direct scientific evidence supporting its efficacy specifically as a decongestant or for treating colds is limited. Some in vitro and animal studies have examined the plant’s anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antipyretic properties, which may offer a rationale for its inclusion in traditional cold remedies. However, these studies do not directly address decongestion or cold symptom relief in humans. No well-controlled clinical trials have validated its use for this purpose. Therefore, while its application in colds and as a decongestant is supported by tradition and limited indirect scientific rationale, robust evidence is lacking.
