Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Horsemint (Monarda spp.), also known as bee balm or wild bergamot, has a history of traditional use for colds and respiratory complaints among Native American tribes and in North American folk medicine. The leaves and flowering tops have been used in teas or infusions to alleviate congestion and soothe sore throats. The plant contains volatile oils such as thymol and carvacrol, which possess mild antiseptic and expectorant properties. These constituents may help loosen mucus and provide a subjective feeling of relief from congestion.

However, there is limited scientific research directly evaluating horsemint’s effectiveness as a decongestant or cold remedy in humans. Most of the evidence comes from traditional use and the known actions of its essential oils, which are also found in related plants like thyme and oregano. No high-quality clinical trials have confirmed its efficacy for treating colds. Thus, the use of horsemint for colds is primarily supported by tradition, with a moderate level of plausibility based on its phytochemical content, but lacking robust scientific validation.
