Evidence supporting the use of: Lo Han Guo
For the health condition: Colds (decongestant)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Lo Han Guo (Siraitia grosvenorii), also known as monk fruit, has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for the treatment of sore throat, cough, and symptoms associated with colds. According to TCM texts, the dried fruit is valued for its cooling and moistening properties, and it is often included in herbal formulations to help soothe the throat, reduce phlegm, and relieve cough and mild congestion. The rationale is based on the traditional theory of "clearing heat" and "moistening the lung," rather than on an understanding of viral pathogens or immune responses.
While a few laboratory studies have identified anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties in extracts from Lo Han Guo, there is currently very limited scientific evidence specifically validating its efficacy as a decongestant or in treating symptoms of the common cold. Most of the support for its use in treating colds thus remains rooted in historical and traditional practice rather than clinical research. No high-quality human clinical trials have demonstrated clear decongestant effects. Therefore, its use for colds is primarily justified by tradition, and the strength of evidence supporting its effectiveness in this context is modest.
