Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Menthol has been traditionally used as a remedy for symptoms of the common cold, particularly as a decongestant. Products containing menthol, such as vapor rubs and inhalers, have been popular for generations, with many people reporting a subjective sensation of easier breathing after use. The cooling sensation produced by menthol activates cold-sensitive receptors in the nose and throat, which can give the impression of improved airflow, even though objective measurements of nasal airway resistance often do not show significant improvement. Several studies have found that while menthol does not actually decrease nasal congestion physiologically, it can make people feel less congested and more comfortable. This placebo effect has contributed to its widespread use. As of now, scientific validation for menthol as an effective decongestant is limited, and major medical organizations do not recommend menthol as a primary treatment for nasal congestion from colds. However, its long history of use and the subjective relief it provides have established its role in traditional and over-the-counter cold remedies.
