Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Moroccan oregano (Origanum compactum) has been traditionally used in Moroccan and broader Mediterranean herbal medicine as a remedy for respiratory ailments, including colds and congestion. The plant contains volatile oils such as carvacrol and thymol, which are believed to have antimicrobial and mild decongestant properties. Historically, oregano infusions, steam inhalations, and topical preparations have been employed to help clear nasal passages and ease breathing in the context of upper respiratory tract infections.

However, while there is some in vitro evidence that compounds found in oregano possess antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity, robust clinical trials in humans specifically evaluating Moroccan oregano for decongestion or the treatment of colds are lacking. Most available studies focus on oregano oil in general, not O. compactum specifically, and the evidence is preliminary. As such, the use of Moroccan oregano for colds is primarily supported by traditional usage with low-to-moderate supporting evidence from laboratory studies, but not by high-quality clinical research.
