Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Mountain pepper (most commonly referring to Tasmannia lanceolata, also known as Tasmanian pepperberry) has a history of traditional use by Indigenous Australians. It has been used as a spice and as a medicinal plant, including for ailments such as colds and respiratory issues. Traditionally, preparations made from the leaves or berries were believed to act as decongestants or to help alleviate symptoms of colds, likely due to their aromatic and pungent properties. However, there is very limited published scientific research validating these uses. The available scientific literature primarily focuses on the antimicrobial and antioxidant properties of mountain pepper extracts, with little direct evidence regarding decongestant activity or efficacy in treating colds. As such, while there is a basis in traditional use, the scientific evidence supporting mountain pepper as a decongestant or cold remedy is minimal and indirect at best. Thus, its use for this purpose should be regarded as primarily traditional, with a low evidence rating.
