Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Orange essential oil (Citrus sinensis) has been traditionally used in aromatherapy for its uplifting scent and is sometimes included in blends to support respiratory health, including colds. The historical justification for its use as a decongestant is weak and largely based on anecdotal reports rather than robust clinical evidence. Most references to orange oil for cold symptoms are found in traditional or folk medicine sources, where it is valued for its refreshing aroma, which may subjectively make breathing feel easier. Scientifically, there is little to no direct evidence that orange essential oil acts as a decongestant or has a significant therapeutic effect on the symptoms of colds. Some laboratory studies have found that orange oil has mild antimicrobial properties, but there is no clinical data demonstrating efficacy against the viruses that cause colds or relief from nasal congestion. Overall, while its pleasant scent may be comforting during illness, its use as a decongestant is not supported by modern scientific studies and is best described as traditional or anecdotal.
