Evidence supporting the use of: American Ginseng
For the health condition: Colds (general)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
American Ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) has a history of traditional use among Native American groups for general health and as a remedy for respiratory infections. However, in recent decades, a number of clinical studies have evaluated its efficacy in preventing and treating the common cold. Notably, extracts such as COLD-fX (a proprietary extract of American Ginseng) have been studied in randomized controlled trials. Some evidence suggests that American Ginseng may modestly reduce the risk, severity, or duration of cold symptoms, particularly when taken prophylactically. For example, a 2005 study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal reported that adults who took American Ginseng extract experienced fewer colds and shorter duration of symptoms compared to placebo. Meta-analyses and systematic reviews indicate a small but statistically significant benefit, although results are not uniformly positive across all studies and some methodological concerns have been raised.
Scientific organizations note that while there is evidence supporting American Ginseng’s use for reducing cold frequency and duration, the overall effect size is modest, and more large-scale, high-quality trials are needed to confirm efficacy and safety. Thus, the use of American Ginseng for colds is supported by both tradition and moderate scientific evidence, but it should not be considered a primary treatment.
