Allyl isothiocyanate, the compound responsible for the pungent flavor of mustard, horseradish, and wasabi, has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in East Asia and Europe. Historically, preparations containing mustard or horseradish have been used as home remedies for colds, believed to help clear congestion and stimulate circulation. These practices date back centuries, but the evidence supporting their effectiveness is anecdotal and based largely on subjective reports of symptomatic relief.

Modern scientific research into the role of allyl isothiocyanate for prevention or treatment of colds is limited. There are in vitro studies showing antimicrobial and mild anti-inflammatory effects of isothiocyanates, but no robust clinical trials have demonstrated that allyl isothiocyanate can prevent or treat the common cold in humans. Its use is therefore primarily justified by tradition rather than scientific validation. The traditional rating of “1” reflects the presence of historical use but a lack of significant evidence of efficacy from controlled studies.
