Allyl sulfide is a sulfur-containing compound found primarily in garlic (Allium sativum) and other members of the Allium genus. Its use for the prevention or treatment of colds is grounded largely in traditional medicine, especially in cultures where garlic has long been consumed for its supposed immune-boosting properties. Historical records from ancient Egypt, Greece, and China indicate that garlic was commonly used to ward off illness, including respiratory infections and the common cold. The rationale for this use was based on observations of its pungent odor and presumed 'cleansing' effects on the body.
In terms of scientific evidence, while some in vitro and animal studies suggest that allyl sulfide and related organosulfur compounds from garlic may have antimicrobial or immunomodulatory properties, direct evidence from high-quality human clinical trials supporting the use of isolated allyl sulfide for cold prevention is limited. Most studies evaluating garlic’s effectiveness have used aged garlic extract or whole garlic preparations, not pure allyl sulfide. These studies have produced mixed results, with some indicating a modest reduction in cold incidence or duration, but not to a degree that would warrant strong scientific endorsement. Thus, the use of allyl sulfide for cold prevention is primarily supported by tradition rather than robust clinical evidence.
