Arabinogalactan, a polysaccharide derived primarily from the larch tree (Larix spp.), has been investigated for its potential immune-modulating properties and its role in supporting the prevention of the common cold. Some scientific studies suggest arabinogalactan may enhance certain immune functions, such as increasing the activity of natural killer (NK) cells and macrophages, as well as supporting the production of cytokines. A few randomized, placebo-controlled trials have evaluated its effectiveness in reducing the incidence and severity of upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs), including the common cold. For instance, a small study published in Current Medical Research and Opinion (2004) found that healthy adults taking larch arabinogalactan experienced significantly fewer colds over a 12-week period compared to placebo. However, the number of available studies is limited, and sample sizes are generally small.

While preclinical research and limited human trials indicate potential immune benefits, the overall evidence base is not strong. There is insufficient high-quality, large-scale clinical data to conclusively recommend arabinogalactan for cold prevention. The ingredient is not a staple of traditional medicine for this use, but is rather promoted based on newer research into its immune-modulating mechanisms. In summary, while there is some scientific rationale and preliminary human evidence supporting arabinogalactan’s role in cold prevention, the strength of evidence is modest (rated 2/5), and more rigorous research is needed to confirm its efficacy.
