Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Bioflavonoids, a class of polyphenolic plant compounds, have long been used in traditional medicine to help with various ailments, including the prevention of colds. Historically, their use has been based on the observation that diets rich in fruits and vegetables—key sources of bioflavonoids—were associated with better general health and fewer infections. Bioflavonoids are often found in combination with vitamin C in supplements, and traditional practices have suggested that they may enhance the effects of vitamin C, particularly in immune support and the prevention of upper respiratory tract infections like the common cold.

While there are some laboratory and animal studies suggesting that certain bioflavonoids have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, direct clinical evidence supporting the use of bioflavonoids (especially as an unspecified group) for cold prevention is weak and inconsistent. Some research has examined specific bioflavonoids, such as quercetin, for their potential antiviral properties, but results in humans are not robust or conclusive. Major health organizations do not recommend bioflavonoid supplementation specifically for cold prevention due to a lack of strong scientific evidence. Thus, the use of bioflavonoids for this purpose is primarily grounded in tradition and extrapolation from their general health-promoting qualities, rather than in well-established clinical findings.
