Cinnamomum, commonly referred to as cinnamon, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and various folk remedies, particularly for the prevention and treatment of colds and respiratory ailments. Historically, cinnamon has been used for its warming properties, believed to "dispel cold," improve circulation, and support the body's immune defenses. In TCM, cinnamon bark (Rou Gui) is often included in herbal formulas for its ability to boost yang energy and combat "wind-cold" invasions, which are thought to cause common cold symptoms.
From a scientific standpoint, cinnamon contains bioactive compounds such as cinnamaldehyde, eugenol, and various polyphenols, some of which have demonstrated antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties in laboratory studies. However, there is currently limited direct clinical evidence to support the effectiveness of cinnamon for the prevention of colds in humans. Most available data are preclinical, and no robust randomized controlled trials have established a clear benefit for cold prevention. Therefore, while cinnamon's use for colds is primarily rooted in tradition, the scientific evidence remains modest and inconclusive.
