Citrus sinensis, commonly known as sweet orange, is primarily used for its high vitamin C (ascorbic acid) content, which is believed to support immune function and potentially prevent or reduce the severity and duration of colds. Scientific studies have shown that vitamin C plays an important role in immune defense by supporting various cellular functions of both the innate and adaptive immune system. Several clinical trials and meta-analyses, including Cochrane reviews, have evaluated vitamin C supplementation for the prevention and treatment of the common cold. While routine vitamin C supplementation does not appear to reduce the incidence of colds in the general population, it may reduce the duration and severity of symptoms. In individuals under physical stress (such as athletes), vitamin C supplementation has been shown to reduce the incidence of colds.
