Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Dragonhead (Dracocephalum spp.) has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in Eastern Europe, Russia, and parts of Asia, for the prevention and treatment of colds and other respiratory ailments. Traditional uses are primarily based on its aromatic properties and the belief that its essential oils and extracts possess antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects. In folk medicine, teas, infusions, and tinctures made from dragonhead leaves and flowers have been used to soothe sore throats, reduce fever, and promote sweating, which are considered helpful in managing the early symptoms of colds.

Scientific research on dragonhead’s efficacy for cold prevention is limited. Some laboratory studies have identified that extracts from Dracocephalum species contain compounds with antimicrobial, antioxidant, and mild anti-inflammatory properties, such as flavonoids and essential oils (e.g., geraniol, citral). However, these findings are largely preliminary and based on in vitro or animal models. There are no robust clinical trials directly supporting the use of dragonhead for preventing or treating colds in humans. Therefore, while its use for this purpose is justified by tradition, scientific validation is currently lacking, and the evidence supporting its efficacy remains weak.
