The use of flavoglycoside-containing plants for the prevention or treatment of colds is primarily rooted in traditional medicine practices, particularly in Traditional Chinese Medicine and some European herbal traditions. These uses are generally based on the broader belief that such plant extracts promote general wellness, support immune function, and help the body resist infections like the common cold. However, direct scientific evidence supporting the effectiveness of flavoglycosides for cold prevention or treatment is limited. Clinical studies investigating Ginkgo biloba, for instance, have largely focused on its effects on cognitive function, circulation, and antioxidant activity, rather than immune modulation or antiviral effects relevant to colds.
