Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Flavonoids are a diverse group of plant compounds found in fruits, vegetables, and some beverages such as tea. They have been researched for a variety of health benefits, including immune system support and potential roles in the prevention or mitigation of the common cold. The scientific interest in flavonoids for cold prevention primarily stems from their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antiviral properties observed in laboratory studies. Some specific flavonoids, such as quercetin, have shown inhibitory effects on certain viruses in vitro, including rhinoviruses, which are responsible for many cases of the common cold. Additionally, a few randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and meta-analyses have suggested modest benefits in reducing the incidence, duration, or severity of colds among individuals taking flavonoid supplements compared to placebo. However, the evidence is limited by small sample sizes, variability in flavonoid types and doses, and potential publication bias. The overall quality of evidence is moderate at best, and systematic reviews have generally concluded that while there is some support for the use of flavonoids in cold prevention, more large-scale, well-designed clinical trials are needed to draw firm conclusions. Thus, while there is a scientific basis and preliminary clinical evidence supporting the use of flavonoids for cold prevention, the evidence is not strong enough to recommend routine use.
