Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Indian Redwood (Biancaea sappan, formerly known as Caesalpinia sappan) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine. Traditionally, the heartwood is used for its purported medicinal properties, including as a remedy for coughs, respiratory tract issues, and to support general immunity, which indirectly relates to the prevention and treatment of colds. The traditional rationale is based on its reputed anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and immune-boosting activities. Several compounds isolated from Indian Redwood, such as brazilin, are noted in preclinical studies for their antimicrobial and antioxidant effects, which could theoretically contribute to cold prevention. However, robust scientific clinical trials directly evaluating its effectiveness for preventing or treating the common cold in humans are lacking. The use of Indian Redwood for colds is thus primarily justified by traditional knowledge and historical usage, rather than by rigorous scientific validation. While some in vitro and animal studies suggest biological activity that could be relevant, there is insufficient clinical evidence to strongly support or refute its efficacy for this specific use. Therefore, its use for cold prevention or treatment is mainly rooted in traditional practice, with only limited preclinical scientific support.
