Pineapple has traditionally been used in some cultures as a home remedy for colds and respiratory ailments. The primary rationale is its content of vitamin C and the enzyme bromelain. Vitamin C is widely known for its role in immune function, and while pineapple is a source, its vitamin C content is moderate compared to other fruits like oranges or guavas. Bromelain, an enzyme found mainly in pineapple stems, has been studied for its anti-inflammatory and mucolytic (mucus-thinning) properties. Some small studies and anecdotal evidence suggest bromelain may help reduce congestion and improve symptoms in respiratory infections. However, the majority of these studies are not specific to pineapple fruit consumption, and bromelain supplements often deliver much higher doses than would be obtained from eating pineapple. Moreover, rigorous clinical trials confirming the efficacy of pineapple or bromelain for cold prevention or treatment are lacking. In summary, the use of pineapple for colds is primarily rooted in traditional practices, with limited scientific support. It may provide some benefit due to its nutrient content and potential anti-inflammatory effects, but it should not be considered a proven or primary treatment for colds.
